Devon's Boxingtalk Interview:
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: DEVON ALEXANDER
By G. Leon
GL: What's the latest and greatest with Devon Alexander, and when can we expect you back in the ring?
Devon Alexander: As soon as possible. [My manager] Kevin Cunningham and [promoter] Don King are talking now about what we're going to do. They're talking about a tune up in December, and hopefully coming back with something bigger after the end of the year.
GL: The tune up in December will take place in St. Louis against who?
DA: They're still trying to figure that out now. I've been in the gym training hard, I'm training twice as hard now that I have the [WBC 140-pound] belt. I'm in the gym just waiting for the call, but right now there's absolutely nothing I can tell you.
GL: Is it important for you to get this fight in before the end of the year?
DA: Yes. I don't want to be too rusty going into next year, I want to stay busy. If not, I'm always in the gym. Rust doesn't come when you're in the gym.
GL: Who are some of the fighters you're looking to face in 2010?
DA: I'm looking at Maidaina, you've got Amir Khan, and Timothy Bradley, whoever, it doesn't matter. This is boxing. Like I said, when you first interviewed me, a few years back, I said I'll fight anybody. That still stands, I'll still fight anybody.
GL: Who do you like in Diaz-Malignagi?
DA: I didn't know they made the fight already. If the fight is not in Houston, I've got Paulie pulling the win out. I thought he won the first time too, but Houston is Diaz's hometown. I think Paulie is going to come out on top this time.
GL: There's a pretty big fight coming up in Vegas, Pacquiao-Cotto. Who do you like in that one?
DA: I know I'm going to get a lot of feedback on this, but I think Cotto wins. He's got power, and he's a natural 147 pounder, plus he's not going to get beat up by Pacquiao. Cotto's got strength and he can fight. It's going to be a good fight, a tremendous fight. I think Cotto can come out victorious.
GL: There's no doubt that Don King has been helpful in getting you to the title. At this point, when you're looking to make the biggest fights out there, do you think there are fights out there that you could be getting, but might not get because of Don's ways of doing things?
DA: I try not to focus on that, but I can believe that because of the promoters and the relationship that they have with each other. I told Don that I would fight anybody, but with all of the stuff that going on behind the scenes, you never know what's going on. I'll fight anybody, so it's up to Don, and my manager Kevin.
GL: Closing thoughts.
DA: I appreciate BoxingTalk for having me on again. I've been the WBC champ for two months now, and I'm going to get ready to reign on the division in 2010.
